There are many ways and many paths you can use to get to Prague Castle – one of the busiest tourist spots in Prague. If you would like to check Prague Castle off your list while avoiding crowds of other visitors, you have two options – to set off to the Castle in the middle of the night or to go through the Stag Moat (Jelení příkop).

Originally, the Stag Moat used to serve to protect the Prague Castle and to separate it from the rest of the city. In order not to spoil sovereigns’ view, grapevine was planted on the hillside and from the beginning of the 17th century one could see deer grazing in the vineyard  and later, during the First Czechoslovak Republic, bears could be spotted there as well. Today the Stag Moat is open to the public and you will likely not see any wild game but there is a lush flora you can feast your eyes on.

Several architecturally interesting objects in the Stag Moat provide evidence that visitors were attracted to the Stag Moat in the past for its silence and peace. These objects are hidden from the visitor’s eye. Make sure you don’t miss Masaryk’s lookout designed by world-famous architect Josip Plečnik. Another example is a recently opened tunnel by one the most important Czech contemporary architects, Josef Pleskot.

Spud. is an unconventional Prague city guide, that highlights its interesting spots and local businesses that are really worth visiting. With a Polaroid camera, we’re mapping four different areas: food and drinks, shops, workplaces of creative people and architecture. Spud. is focused on fresh places with unique atmosphere, cafés with the best coffee, shops with the finest goods, workshops and studios of the most skilled designers and architectural attractions with the greatest charm. Spud. is also mainly about people, who stand behind these projects. Without their invention and courage to fulfill their dreams Prague would be a much poorer place. That’s why we’re so grateful to all of them!
